The Yobe State Government has announced an embargo on all contract appointments across the state’s public service, following a directive issued by Governor Mai Mala Buni.
The decision was conveyed in a circular signed by the Head of Service on Wednesday, Abdullahi Musa Shehu, stating that ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) will no longer process or accept new applications for contract engagements.
According to the circular, all officers currently serving on contract will be allowed to complete their existing terms. However, there will be no renewal, extension or re-engagement once their present contracts expire.
The government noted that the embargo does not apply to a small category of personnel essential to the operation of critical sectors. These include medical doctors, other health professionals, expatriates and specialized technical staff.
For these exempted groups, any request for contract engagement must be properly justified and submitted for prior approval from the Office of the Head of Service.
The circular stressed strict compliance by all MDAs, warning that any breach would be treated as a violation of established service procedures.
The government described the policy as part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving succession planning and strengthening career development structures within the Yobe State Public Service.
