NLC, ASUU Warn of Possible Nationwide Protests, Strikes Over Unmet Agreements

Tensions are mounting between the Federal Government and two major labour bodies as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have hinted at the possibility of nationwide protests and strike actions.

This follows stalled negotiations and what the unions describe as the government’s failure to address urgent concerns affecting the education sector.

Both unions said the prolonged delays in resolving key issues had heightened frustration among workers and academics, warning that industrial action may be unavoidable if their demands remain unmet.

They criticised the government for what they described as a lack of proactive measures to protect students and staff, despite repeated warnings about ongoing insecurity.

ASUU also accused the government of reneging on agreements concerning salary arrears, improved welfare for academic staff, and adequate funding for universities, warning that continued negligence could trigger renewed industrial action.

The NLC supported ASUU’s position, urging the government to take immediate steps to safeguard the education sector and prevent further disruption of academic activities.

Earlier, the NLC and ASUU condemned the Federal Government for failing to address the growing number of school abductions across the country, describing the situation as a serious threat to education and national development.
