
The Emir of Gazargamu, His Royal Highness Alhaji Ahmad Tijjani Ibn Saleh, has died in Cairo, Egypt, after a prolonged illness.
The traditional ruler passed away on Tuesday while receiving medical treatment in the Egyptian capital.
His death was confirmed by his son, Engr. Tijjani Hamisu Bala, General Manager of the Yobe State Road Maintenance Agency (YORMA), in a statement made available to journalists in Damaturu.
Bala described the late monarch as a father, mentor and revered traditional ruler whose life was dedicated to the service of his people and humanity.
“With profound sorrow and total submission to the will of Almighty Allah, I announce the passing of my beloved father, namesake and traditional ruler, His Royal Highness Alhaji Ahmad Tijjani Ibn Saleh, the Emir of Gazargamu, who returned to his Creator today, June 9, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt, after a protracted illness,” he said.
According to him, the late emir’s life was characterised by wisdom, humility, courage and unwavering commitment to the development and welfare of his people.
He noted that the monarch’s leadership, guidance and enduring legacy would continue to inspire generations within and beyond the emirate.
“His fatherly guidance, leadership and legacy will remain a source of inspiration to us all,” Bala stated.
He prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the late emir’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus and provide the family, subjects and associates with the strength to bear the loss.
As of the time of filing this report, funeral arrangements had yet to be announced.
It was also unclear whether the late monarch would be buried in Nigeria or Egypt.
The late emir was a prominent traditional ruler in Yobe State and played a significant role in preserving the cultural heritage and traditional institutions of the Gazargamu Emirate.
