The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed food and non-food items to vulnerable families in Maiduguri, with special focus on persons living with disabilities.
The distribution was led by the NEDC Borno State Coordinator, Engr. Mohammed Umar, on behalf of the Commission’s Managing Director/CEO, Mohammed Goni Alkali, on Thursday.
Speaking at the event, Umar said the intervention was necessary as persons with disabilities were among the hardest hit by recent floods in the state.
“About 50 percent of their members were affected by the floods. We felt it was important to reach out to them because they are among the most vulnerable and in need of support. We conducted an inventory and identified 706 members, all of whom are persons living with disabilities,” he stated.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting the welfare of residents across the North-East, particularly the most disadvantaged groups.
Each beneficiary received a 25kg bag of rice, a 10kg bag of sugar, a gallon of vegetable oil, a carton of pasta and noodles, as well as a rubber mat and a blanket.
The NEDC has, in recent months, intensified humanitarian support to communities affected by insurgency, floods, and poverty in the North-East, with similar interventions carried out in Yobe and other states of the region.
