A middle-aged woman reportedly set herself on fire at a family residence in Bauchi and later died from severe burns, the Police in Bauchi have confirmed.
Ahmed Wakil, Spokesman of the Bauchi Police Command, told newsmen on Thursday that the incident occurred shortly after the woman arrived at the family house carrying a gallon of petrol.
Mr. Wakil explained that the woman sought to see one Yelwa Abubakar Balewa but was told Yelwa was not available. She then allegedly poured petrol on herself and set herself ablaze.
Eyewitnesses rushed her to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest the woman may have been mentally unstable.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered a full investigation into the incident.
