The Federal Government has inaugurated an Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) to ensure full, timely and transparent execution of the 2025 agreement reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), in a move aimed at strengthening industrial harmony in the university system.

According to a press release issued by the Federal Ministry of Education on 8 June 2026, the inauguration took place in Abuja under the Ministry, with the committee mandated to monitor compliance, track implementation timelines and ensure that all provisions of the agreement are faithfully carried out.

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, described the initiative as a key milestone in consolidating stability within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, noting that sustained dialogue remains central to reforming the university system.

She said the monitoring committee was established to guarantee adherence to agreed deliverables and strengthen engagement between government and university-based unions.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Abel O. Enitan, said the committee represents an important step in reinforcing accountability and governance mechanisms within the education sector, urging members to remain professional and objective in discharging their duties.

Chairman of the IMC, Olarewaju Tejuoso, pledged transparency and diligence in implementing the committee’s mandate, while ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, called for sustained dialogue and regular consultations to ensure effective implementation of the agreement.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to the full implementation of the agreement and to maintaining lasting industrial peace across Nigerian universities.
