Tension erupted at the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi on Tuesday as students protested against repeated armed robbery attacks on off-campus accommodations, resulting in the death of one person.
The latest attack occurred at 2:30 am in the Gwallameji area, with robbers stealing properties and injuring several students. The protesters, demanding improved security, were dispersed by police using teargas.
Students lamented the frequent robbery incidents, with one anonymous student describing the attacks as violent and brutal. The student revealed that about 50 robbers attacked three student lodges, making off with phones, money, and other valuables.
The police arrested three suspects but later released them, leading to a confrontation with students.
The police spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakili, stated that the situation is being calmed, and an update will be provided later. The students, however, remain adamant in their demand for improved security measures to ensure their safety.
