A social enterprise, 200MillionTrees, has launched the Leucaena 3-in-1 Project to address Nigeria’s farmer-herder conflict.
Project Founder, Ibraheem Dooba, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday.
“Nigeria has lost 19,000 lives due to farmer-herder clashes. We want to end it by fostering peace and prosperity,” Dooba said.
The project has planted 800,000 Leucaena trees in 10 states, including Niger, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, and Taraba.
The Leucaena tree promotes:
– Cattle weight gain by 1 kilo daily
– 20% increase in milk production
– Soil fertility through nitrogen fixation
– Desertification combat
Key partners include local farmer and Fulani organizations, traditional rulers, and stakeholders.
200MillionTrees targets two million trees within the next year and plans to develop a mimosine-free Leucaena variety.
