FG Seeks Stakeholders’ Collaboration to Enhance Teaching, Education Standards

The Federal Government has called on stakeholders in the education sector to deepen collaboration towards improving teaching quality and strengthening education standards across the country.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Abel Enitan, made the call on Monday at the 69th National Council on Education (NCE) meeting held in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The event, themed “Quality Education Data and Professionalisation of Teaching: A Tool for Enhanced National Development,” brought together education commissioners, policy makers, and experts from across the federation.

Enitan emphasized that teaching was not just a vocation but a noble profession that shapes the destiny of nations, adding that improving the welfare and professionalism of teachers must remain a collective responsibility.

“Our collective responsibility is to ensure that teachers are well-prepared, well-supported, and well-rewarded. Through the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, the Federal Government continues to enforce professional standards, ensuring that only qualified and certified teachers are allowed to practice,” he said.

He commended state governments that have embraced federal initiatives by registering and licensing teachers while providing an enabling environment for continuous professional development.

Enitan added that the professionalisation of teaching must go hand in hand with improved working conditions and clear career pathways.

“A teacher who feels valued will in turn inspire students to value learning, and this is the chain of transformation that builds great nations,” he stated.

He further noted that the challenges facing education in Nigeria require collaboration among all stakeholders, including federal, state, and local governments, development partners, civil society, and the private sector.

According to him, the National Council on Education provides a unique platform for dialogue, policy review, and harmonisation of strategies to achieve sustainable development in the education sector.

Declaring the conference open, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Mr. Olayide Adelami, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to aligning with federal education reforms and promoting inclusive, accessible, and quality education.

Aiyedatiwa noted that his administration had recorded significant progress in reshaping the state’s education landscape in line with its Seven-Point Agenda, OUR EASE, which aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) on quality education for all.

The National Council on Education serves as the highest policy-making body on education in Nigeria, tasked with formulating, reviewing, and implementing national policies that promote educational development at all levels.
