The Nigerian Army has confirmed that troops of the 25 Task Force Brigade survived a heavy insurgent ambush near Wajiroko, in the Azir-Multe axis of Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, while returning from a routine patrol on the fringes of Sambisa Forest.
In a statement on Saturday, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, said the patrol team, led by the Commander of the 25 Task Force Brigade, Brig.-Gen. M. Uba, came under sudden fire from terrorists.
She said the troops, comprising soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), fought through the ambush with superior firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat in disarray.
Anele confirmed that two soldiers and two CJTF members lost their lives during the encounter.
She said the Army high command had commiserated with the families of the fallen personnel, describing their deaths as heroic sacrifices in service to the nation.
The spokesman also dismissed reports circulating on some online platforms alleging that the Brigade Commander was abducted during the attack.
She urged the public to disregard the “fake narrative,” assuring that the commander and all surviving troops had returned safely to base.
Anele said the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu (NAM), commended the troops for their courage and resilience, noting that they continued to operate in one of the country’s most dangerous theatres of conflict.
Shaibu, she added, praised their unwavering commitment and bravery, stating that their sacrifices remained a reminder of the dangers faced daily by personnel working to keep Nigeria secure.
