
Schools from Borno and Kogi states have emerged top performers at the 2025 MTN Anti-Substance Abuse Programme (ASAP) School Quiz Competition Grand Finale, clinching the top three positions in the highly competitive national contest.
The grand finale, streamed live on YouTube on November 18, featured 51 public and private secondary schools selected from the six geopolitical zones of the country.
According to organisers, 31 schools participated at the state level, 11 advanced to the regional stage, and nine competed in the national finals.
Government Day Secondary School, Borno State, claimed the overall first position with a score of 86.7 per cent, earning national recognition for its outstanding performance.
A tie at 80 per cent between GYB Model Science Secondary School, Adankolo-Lokoja, Kogi State, and Yerwa Government Girls Secondary School, Borno State, led to a tie-breaker round at the finale.
At the end of the tiebreak session, GYBMSSS secured second place with 90 per cent, while Yerwa Government Girls Secondary School finished third with 80 per cent.
Principal of GYB Model Science Secondary School, Chief Ajofe Goodwins Yakubu, commended the students for their impressive showing. He also praised the teachers for their dedication, describing the achievement as a testament to the state government’s investment in public education.
“The feat underscores Gov Ododo’s commitment to delivering quality education, especially in public schools,” he said.
The MTN ASAP Grand Finale also featured goodwill messages from representatives of the MTN Foundation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
Organisers said the competition aimed to promote academic excellence, resilience and positive lifestyle choices among young people. Awards were presented to outstanding schools, students, and teachers in recognition of their achievements.
