Emir of Lafiya Declares Zulum ‘Stands Tall Among Peers’ During Courtesy Visit

The Emir of Lafiya, His Royal Highness Justice Sidi Muhammad Bage I (Rtd.), on Wednesday lauded Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno, describing him as one of the best-performing governors in Nigeria.

The monarch gave the commendation when he led a delegation to the Government House, Maiduguri, to brief the governor on preparations for the University of Maiduguri’s 25th combined convocation and 50th anniversary celebration.

Justice Bage, who is the Pro-Chancellor of the university, said the governor’s leadership had earned him national recognition, noting that members of the National Honours Committee had unanimously nominated Zulum for a national honour without any external recommendation.

“Today, Your Excellency, you stand tall amongst the governors; you are one of the best governors in Nigeria,” the Emir said.

He added that the committee’s unanimous decision to recommend Zulum for a national honour was based on his performance, saying the then-President approved the nomination immediately.

The Emir praised the governor for demonstrating strength, wisdom and commitment in managing the affairs of Borno State, despite enormous challenges.

In his response, Governor Zulum expressed appreciation for the Emir’s remarks, assuring that his administration would continue to support the University of Maiduguri.

“I want to assure you that we shall support all activities lined up for the convocation and anniversary. The Borno State Government, under my leadership, will provide all necessary support,” he said.

Zulum stressed that supporting the institution was an obligation, noting that many leaders in the state were products of the university.

The Emir’s delegation included the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Prof. Mohammed Mele, two Deputy Vice-Chancellors, members of the governing council and other principal officers.
