TETFund Reaffirms Support for Education in Adamawa

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising education as a key driver for youth development, lasting peace, and sustainable growth in the state.

Governor Fintiri made this known on Thursday while receiving the leadership of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) at the Government House, Yola, during a courtesy visit ahead of the Fund’s annual retreat being held in the state.

The governor welcomed TETFund’s decision to select Adamawa as host of the retreat, describing it as a clear vote of confidence in the state’s peaceful environment and steady developmental progress. He noted that his administration has consistently allocated a significant portion of the state budget to education, a move he said has yielded measurable improvements in learning outcomes.

According to him, Adamawa State, which once ranked low in external examination performance, has now emerged among the top-performing states in WAEC and NECO results. He disclosed that over 80 per cent of students currently record five credits and above, including English and Mathematics, describing the achievement as one of the state’s most notable educational milestones in recent years.

Governor Fintiri appealed to TETFund to sustain and expand its intervention programmes in Adamawa’s tertiary institutions, particularly those located in security-challenged areas. He also requested support for perimeter fencing to enhance institutional security and proposed the relocation of a planned solar power project to Adamawa State University to benefit a larger student population.

The governor further sought additional intervention in hostel development to accommodate projected increases in student enrolment, assuring the delegation of the state government’s readiness to deepen collaboration aimed at improving education and reducing youth exposure to crime, poverty, and radicalisation.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Architect Sonny Echono, said the visit was part of activities lined up for the Fund’s annual retreat, which provides a platform to review progress, set new targets, and strengthen future planning.

Echono explained that Adamawa State was unanimously chosen to host the retreat due to its improving educational profile and conducive atmosphere for strategic policy discussions. He commended the state government for its achievements in the education sector, noting that several tertiary institutions in Adamawa continue to benefit from TETFund interventions.

He said the retreat would help improve the quality, efficiency, and timeliness of the Fund’s interventions nationwide, while also strengthening monitoring and evaluation processes critical to national education planning.

Echono thanked Governor Fintiri for the warm reception and assured him of TETFund’s continued partnership in promoting academic excellence and institutional development in Adamawa State.
