Borno Assembly Extends Local Government Tenure to Three Years

The Borno State House of Assembly on Tuesday approved an amendment extending the tenure of newly elected Local Government Chairmen and Councillors from two years to three years across the state.

The decision followed the passage of a bill to amend the existing Local Government Administration Law during plenary in Maiduguri.

Under the new law, elected Chairmen and Councillors in the state’s 27 Local Government Areas will now serve a three-year term, replacing the former two-year tenure.

Lawmakers said the extension was aimed at strengthening grassroots governance by promoting continuity, stability and improved service delivery at the local level.

They explained that the previous two-year tenure often limited the capacity of local government administrations to effectively plan, implement and complete meaningful development projects for their communities.

According to the House, the new three-year term will provide local government officials with adequate time to execute people-oriented programmes, enhance accountability and deepen democratic practices at the grassroots.

The Assembly added that the amendment would also reduce frequent election cycles, allowing councils to focus more on governance and development rather than political transitions.

Following its passage, the bill is expected to be transmitted to the Executive arm of government for assent, after which it will take full legal effect across the state.
