Gombe, NEDC Move to Rebuild School for Learners With Disabilities

The Gombe State Government has entered into a partnership with the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to renovate and rebuild the School for Persons with Disabilities in the state, in a bid to strengthen inclusive education.

The initiative was commended on Thursday by the Gombe State Coordinator of the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA), Halima Mahdi, who described the intervention as timely and impactful.

Mahdi congratulated the Commissioner for Education and the Chairman of the Gombe State Disability Commission for working together with the NEDC to improve learning conditions for persons living with disabilities.

“I wish to sincerely congratulate His Excellency’s team, particularly the Honourable Commissioner for Education and the Chairman of the Disability Commission, for coming together as critical stakeholders on education to collaborate with the North-East Development Commission in renovating and rebuilding the school for the PWDs in Gombe State,” she said.

She noted that the project would significantly enhance the education and welfare of learners with disabilities, stressing that access to a safe and conducive learning environment is vital to achieving education for all.

Mahdi added that the intervention aligns with national and global commitments to inclusive education, including the Sustainable Development Goals, and serves as a positive example for other states in the North-East and beyond.

According to her, the renovation would help restore dignity and hope to learners with disabilities, while also improving enrolment, retention and learning outcomes.

She further called for sustained investment in special needs education, particularly in teacher training and the provision of appropriate learning materials, to ensure the long-term impact of the project.
