Gunmen Kill 15 in Fresh Attacks on Tiv Communities in Taraba

No fewer than 15 persons have been killed following coordinated attacks on Tiv communities in Chanchanji Ward of Takum Local Government Area of Taraba, according to the Southern Taraba Youths Coalition for Peace (STYCOP).

STYCOP said in a statement on Monday that the attacks, allegedly carried out by suspected herdsmen militias, occurred in the early hours of Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026.

The affected communities were identified as Abokpa, Abeda, Tse Paveun, Gbundu, Mbayevkyaior (Peva) and Tse Shile (Amadu).

The group described the attacks as barbaric and unprovoked, adding that several residents were displaced as homes and farmlands were abandoned in the wake of the violence.

According to STYCOP, the incident has heightened fear among residents and posed a serious threat to peace and stability in Southern Taraba, particularly in farming communities that have repeatedly come under attack.

The coalition said it was mourning with the families of those killed and expressed concern over the humanitarian situation of displaced persons who are now without shelter and means of livelihood.

STYCOP called on security agencies to immediately deploy personnel to Chanchanji Ward and other vulnerable areas to prevent further attacks and protect lives and property.

It also urged the authorities to investigate the incident and ensure the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators and their sponsors.

The group further appealed for urgent humanitarian assistance, including food, shelter and medical care, for those displaced by the attacks.

STYCOP commended the Chairman of Takum Local Government Area, Hon. Benjamin Bako, for condemning the incident and initiating security mobilisation, but stressed that concrete action was required to restore peace.

It urged the Taraba State Government, security agencies, traditional institutions and other stakeholders to act swiftly to prevent further bloodshed in the area.
