University Staff Protest 40% Pay Rise for ASUU

Some university staff have expressed dissatisfaction over reports of a 40 per cent salary increase for members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), alleging unequal treatment among workers in the tertiary education sector.

The staff, drawn from non-academic unions and administrative cadres, said the reported increment, which applies to ASUU members, had generated concern across federal universities.

They noted that many university employees were still awaiting payment of promotion arrears, earned allowances and other wage-related adjustments.

A senior university official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that while improved welfare for lecturers was welcome, similar consideration should be extended to other categories of staff.

“There should be fairness and inclusiveness in salary reviews within the university system,” the official said.

Some staff representatives called on the Federal Government to adopt a holistic approach to wage adjustments in tertiary institutions to maintain harmony and industrial stability.

Labour analysts warned that disparities in remuneration within the university system could affect morale and productivity if not properly addressed.
