Troops repel midnight insurgent attacks in Borno

Troops of the Nigerian military have repelled two separate midnight attacks by suspected insurgents in parts of Borno State, restoring calm to the affected communities.

The attacks, believed to have been carried out by fighters linked to Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram, targeted Damboa town in Damboa Local Government Area and Kofa village, a satellite community near Maiduguri.

According to the police, the insurgents attempted to strike both locations on the same night but were successfully repelled by security forces.

The spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Kenneth Nahum, disclosed this in separate posts on Monday.

Nahum said the attacks occurred between about 12:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. when the insurgents launched coordinated assaults on the communities.

He explained that troops engaged the attackers and successfully thwarted the attempts, forcing them to retreat.

“Normalcy has been restored in both Damboa Town and Kofa Village,” he said.

The police spokesman added that details of casualties, if any, were yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing the report.

Security agencies have since intensified surveillance in the affected areas to prevent further attacks.

More details are expected as investigations continue.
