The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has warned that prolonged delay in concluding renegotiations with university unions could deepen uncertainty in the nation’s university system.
SSANU National President, Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, gave the warning in his Eid-el-Fitr message to members, urging the Federal Government to urgently finalise ongoing talks and introduce measures to cushion the impact of rising inflation on workers.
Ibrahim said rising living costs had placed significant pressure on university workers, many of whom continue to discharge their duties despite economic hardship.
He noted that workers were making sacrifices to sustain institutions that play a vital role in national development and warned that such sacrifices should not be taken for granted.
The SSANU president urged the government to prioritise the conclusion of renegotiations with SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), stressing that further delays could erode confidence within the university system.
He called for policies that would translate into tangible relief for workers through improved welfare, wage adjustments and other economic measures.
According to him, the rising cost of living, driven by persistent inflation, has placed heavy strain on workers and their families.
Ibrahim also expressed sympathy with victims of recent bomb attacks in Maiduguri and called for improved security measures across the country.
He extended Eid-el-Fitr greetings to members, the Muslim Ummah and Nigerians at large, commending their discipline and resilience during the Ramadan fast.
