The Taraba State Government has suspended all mining activities across the state with immediate effect over security concerns that could undermine the prevailing peace and stability in the state.
The directive was announced on Friday in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Gebon Timothy Kataps, on behalf of Governor Agbu Kefas.
According to the statement, the decision followed credible security reports indicating the existence of threats capable of disrupting the peace currently enjoyed by residents.
The government said it had also concluded plans to establish a task force to oversee security and safety within the mining sector.
It explained that the task force would ensure that mining operations resume only after the identified security threats had been effectively addressed.
The statement directed all local government councils and traditional rulers to enforce strict compliance with the suspension order in their respective areas.
It warned that any violation of the directive should be reported immediately to the nearest security agency, stressing that offenders would face appropriate sanctions.
The government further disclosed that arrangements had been finalised to meet with artisanal miners next week to brief them on new security measures and vigilance requirements.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the state government stated that mining activities would only be allowed to resume in a secure and properly regulated environment.
Residents were urged to cooperate with security agencies and promptly report any suspicious activities.
The suspension takes immediate effect.
