President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved fresh appointments across key education agencies, including the National Examinations Council (NECO), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the Federal Polytechnic N’yak-Shendam, and the National Library of Nigeria.
The appointments, announced on Wednesday, also include the renewal of tenure for the Director-General of the National Library.
President Tinubu appointed Prof. Modupe Adeola Adelabu as Chairman of the Governing Board of NECO while retaining the current Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi.
Prof. Adelabu, a retired professor of educational administration, rose to the rank of full professor at Obafemi Awolowo University. She previously served as Deputy Governor of Ekiti State between 2013 and 2014 and chaired NBTE from 2018 to 2021.
In another development, the President appointed Prof. Babatunde Salako as Chairman of NBTE, describing him as a seasoned academic with decades of experience in higher education governance and policy leadership.
Prof. Salako earlier served as Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) from 2016 to 2024, where he oversaw major reforms, strengthened research governance, and expanded international collaborations.
President Tinubu also approved the appointment of Engr. Dr Bongfa Binfa as Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam in Plateau State. He succeeds Dr Mukaila Zakari Ya’u, the institution’s pioneer rector, whose tenure ended on March 16, 2026.
Dr Binfa was appointed for a single term of five years following a selection process initiated through public advertisement in national newspapers in September 2025. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and previously served as Deputy Rector (Academic) at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas Bonny, as well as a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic Idah.
Meanwhile, the President renewed the tenure of Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi as Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria for a final five-year term. She was first appointed on September 2, 2021.
Under her leadership, the National Library has implemented several reforms aimed at modernising its operations, including the development of the National Repository of Nigeria, the Newspaper and Magazine Locator, the Index and Abstract to Nigerian Newspapers, and the National Virtual Library of Nigeria.
She also played a key role in advancing the completion of the National Library Headquarters project in Abuja, alongside plans to transfer heritage collections from state branches to the new facility.
According to the Presidency, the renewal of her tenure is expected to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms, completion of the headquarters project, and effective implementation of the institution’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on April 22, 2026.
