Gombe Partners IITA to Boost Food Security through Improved Seed System
Gombe State Government on Tuesday partnered with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to tackle food insecurity by introducing an improved seed system for maximum outputs.
The partnership, under the Feed the Future program, aims to make quality and certified seeds affordable and available for farmers in the state.
IITA presented National Agricultural Seeds Council Certificates to Community-Based Seed Entrepreneurs (CBSE) Cooperatives in Gombe State, marking a significant step towards ensuring food security. The team, led by Mr. Prakash Kant, emphasized the need for collaboration to promote certified seeds and avoid planting treated grains.
The partnership will cover three local government areas, providing training for community-based cooperatives to produce certified seedlings at affordable rates. The initiative has the potential to generate Internally Generated Revenue for the state, leveraging Gombe’s central location and community involvement.
Deputy Governor Manassah Daniel Jatau commended IITA’s contributions to agricultural development in the state, highlighting the need for improved seeds to increase outputs. The state government has made agriculture a priority, aiming to add value to crops produced and engage small farmers.
The partnership is expected to overcome challenges posed by climatic change and low-quality seeds, increasing yields and food security in Gombe State.
