NEDC Distributes Assistive Devices, Cash to 188 Persons with Disabilities in Borno

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) in collaboration with the National Commission For Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) has distributed 188 assistive devices and cash interventions to persons with disabilities in Borno State. Each beneficiary received N50,000 in cash support, disbursed directly into their personal bank accounts.

The distribution ceremony held at Forshams Banquet Hall in Maiduguri was attended by NEDC’s Managing Director/CEO, Ambassador Goni Mohammed Alkali, and the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Mr. James Lalu.

Ambassador Alkali announced that similar exercises would be held in the remaining North East states, including Adamawa, Gombe, Yobe, Bauchi, and Taraba. Executive Director of Humanitarian Affairs at NEDC, Umar Sani Tashin, highlighted the devastating impact of the Boko Haram insurgency on the North East region and pledged continued support to persons living with disabilities.

The assistive devices distributed include wheelchairs, hearing aids, and prosthetic limbs, which will enable beneficiaries to live with dignity and independence.

The NEDC has established specific divisions to handle different categories of vulnerable groups, including persons living with disabilities.

The Borno State Chairman of the Persons with Disabilities, Mohammed Abubakar, expressed gratitude to NEDC for their assistance and appealed for more direct support to the association.
