The National Universities Commission (NUC) has highlighted poor governance, academic corruption, and inadequate funding as significant challenges facing tertiary education in Nigeria.
Acting Executive Secretary Chris Maiyaki made this statement at the 2024 Registry Lecture at Babcock University, emphasizing the need for effective administration and governance to address these issues.
Maiyaki noted a decline in the nation’s university system over the past three decades, attributing it to factors such as economic pressure, poor governance, and a broken family system.
He urged university administrators to embrace technology and artificial intelligence to revolutionize their institutions and cultivate strong relationships with external stakeholders.
The NUC Executive Secretary also called for collaboration to create a desired future for higher education, assuring the Federal Government’s support in creating policies that would direct institutions towards accomplishing their goals. He expressed optimism, citing Nigeria’s improvement in university rankings as a sign of resilience.
The lecture aimed to raise and interrogate key issues about the university system, exchange ideas, and stimulate stakeholders to do more for the country’s educational sector.
