The Gombe State Government, through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project, is set to establish a tannery to harness the state’s vast livestock resources and stimulate economic growth within the leather industry.
The State Coordinator Gombe State L-PRES, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, announced this during a briefing with journalists following a recent study tour of the Kano Tannery industry.
Professor Abubakar stated that the decision to establish a tannery was influenced by the significant progress made in the preparations for the International Cattle Market and Modern Abbatoir, adding that development of these facilities will create a favorable environment for the leather industry, further enhancing the state’s economic potential.
“To support this project and ensure a consolidated and comprehensive development along the livestock value chain, the tanning and leather industries should not be overlooked considering their role in the overal livestock sector.
“Driven by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s commitment to revitalizing and overhauling the livestock sector, Gombe L-PRES conducted this three-day study tour of Kano State’s tanneries to gain insights into the tanning industry and its operations with the aim of establishing a similar industry in Gombe State”, he noted.
“We get valuable insights into best practices, challenges, and opportunities within the Kano State leather production sector. By leveraging this knowledge, we aim to establish a more effective leather industry here in Gombe State” he added.
Gombe State is now strategizing on raw material sourcing, tanning technologies, quality control, marketing, and industry dynamics to establish a thriving leather production sector for job creation, revenue generation, and economic growth.
In addition to the ongoing plans to establish an international cattle market and modern abattoir, the L-PRES project is currently working to map and redemarcate grazing reserves and cattle routes to promote peace and stability by addressing recurring conflicts between herders and farmers in the state.
Recall that, in June of this year, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya led a delegation to Morocco to study the country’s agricultural sector, focusing on dairy and beef industries with a view to learning about modern agricultural practices, technologies, and approaches to advancing agro-allied industrialization and businesses towards building a more robust and sustainable agri-economy.
