The Adamawa State House of Assembly has introduced a new bill aimed at establishing an Adamawa State Electricity Commission, with the goal of generating electricity for local use. The bill successfully passed its first reading on Monday and is set for a second reading on the next legislative day.
The bill, sponsored by Kantomon Bulus Naphtali, the representative for Shelleng constituency, was presented during a session presided over by Speaker Bathiya Wesley on Monday.
Titled “A Bill for a Law to Establish the Adamawa State Electricity Commission for the Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electricity in Adamawa State and to Provide for Other Matters Incidental Thereto,” the proposal seeks to establish a commission dedicated to harnessing various power sources across the state.
Kantomon emphasized that the creation of this commission would boost economic activities and improve residents’ quality of life. He highlighted potential power sources like the Kiri Dam in Shelleng, which could be utilized by the commission to meet local electricity needs.
Following the initial reading, the Speaker directed the chairman of the Rules and Business Committee to prepare the bill for its second reading, moving it a step closer to potential implementation.
