The Borno State Ministry of Transport has unveiled plans to construct an intra-city railway network within Maiduguri and its environs, aiming to transform urban transportation in the region.
The railway system will include 12 strategically located substations, designed to improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and boost economic growth by facilitating seamless movement of people and goods.
This initiative is part of the state government’s commitment to sustainable development and eco-friendly transport solutions.
During a site inspection of the proposed stations on Thursday, the Honourable Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, emphasized the project’s significance. “This railway system will enhance residents’ quality of life and open up new economic opportunities,” he stated.
Representatives from the Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), the government’s implementation partner, joined the inspection.
The project is a flagship initiative of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s administration, which has previously collaborated with EEC on major infrastructure projects such as flyovers and road dualizations in Maiduguri.
Feasibility studies and community consultations are underway to ensure the railway’s successful implementation.
