The Federal Government has added 16 new trades, including hairstyling, plumbing, GSM repair, and makeup, to the basic education curriculum for primary and junior secondary schools.
A statement by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) on Thursday said the reform, which takes effect from January 2025, aims to equip students with practical skills and enhance their employability.
The new subjects include tiling and floor works, POP installation, event decoration, bakery and confectioneries, interior design, satellite/TV antenna installation, and solar installation and maintenance.
Other trades are CCTV and intercom installation, garment making, agriculture and processing (including poultry, beekeeping, and horticulture), and basic digital literacy, incorporating IT and robotics.
The NOA noted that the move aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting skill-based education and addressing unemployment among youths.
The reform is expected to complement existing subjects by preparing students to meet the demands of a dynamic economy.
