UNIMAID Signs MoU With Opay For N1.2bn Scholarship Scheme

The University of Maiduguri has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with OPay Digital Services to implement a ₦1.2 billion scholarship scheme spanning ten years across selected universities in the North-East.

The signing ceremony took place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at the University’s Annex Chamber, Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building.

Speaking at the event, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at OPay, Mr. Itoro Udo, said the initiative was aimed at alleviating financial challenges faced by students and empowering them in their academic pursuits.

Under the scheme, 20 students of the University of Maiduguri will receive annual scholarships of ₦300,000 each, bringing the institution’s allocation to ₦60 million over the ten-year period.

“This scholarship reflects our commitment to investing in young people and making education more accessible, particularly in regions where opportunities are limited,” Udo stated.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Yakubu Muktar, the Dean of the College of Postgraduate Studies, commended OPay for the intervention, noting that it would reduce financial pressure on students while motivating them to strive for excellence.

The University of Maiduguri is one of 16 institutions selected for the initiative, which is considered a significant investment in students and the future of the nation at large.
