Obasanjo Commissions First International Conference Centre in Bauchi

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, has commissioned the first-ever International Conference Centre (ICC) in Bauchi State, describing it as a symbol of foresight, modern governance, and a gateway for global engagement.

The commissioning ceremony, held in Bauchi on Wednesday, was attended by top government officials, traditional leaders, development partners, and members of the public.

The multi-billion naira edifice is a flagship project of the Governor Bala Mohammed-led administration and is aimed at opening Bauchi State to international conferences, investment opportunities, and diplomatic engagements.

Obasanjo, while delivering his remarks, commended Governor Bala Mohammed for his vision and commitment to infrastructural development. He noted that in today’s interconnected world, such facilities are essential for meaningful participation in the global economy.

“No nation or subnational entity can operate in isolation. Facilities like this Conference Centre reflect leadership that is thinking beyond today and planning for tomorrow. I congratulate the people of Bauchi and commend the governor for this outstanding initiative,” the former president said.

The idea for the construction of the ICC Bauchi was first conceived under the leadership of Governor Bala Mohammed and took off when Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State, as Chairman of the North East Governors’ Forum, performed the groundbreaking ceremony several years ago.

Speaking at the event, Governor Bala Mohammed said the completion and commissioning of the ICC marked the fulfilment of a vision to strategically position Bauchi as a hub for international dialogue, trade, and development.

“Our aim is to grow the economy of Bauchi by attracting investors, hosting international conferences, and creating employment opportunities for our youth. This project is not just a building — it is a platform for global integration,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to former President Obasanjo for accepting the invitation to commission the centre and thanked all stakeholders who supported the project from inception to completion.

Also speaking, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Dr. Aminu Hassan Gamawa, and the State Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Hon. Danlami Ahmed Kawule, both praised the governor for his developmental strides, describing the ICC as a legacy project.

They reiterated the administration’s commitment to completing more impactful projects that would uplift the socio-economic status of the state.

The International Conference Centre is expected to host national and international events and serve as a catalyst for boosting hospitality, tourism, and related sectors in the state.
