Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Laws (LL.D) on Sheikh Ibrahim Ibn Saleh al-Hussaini, Chairman of the Fatwa Committee of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
The award was approved by the university’s governing council as part of its 44th Convocation Ceremony, scheduled to hold on Saturday, January 25, 2025. The ceremony will also see Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, honored with a Doctor of Science (D.Sc) degree.
In a statement at his Abuja residence, Sheikh Saleh commended the institution for its non-discriminatory approach in recognizing the contributions of Nigerians. He described the award as a testament to the values of unity and merit.
“This recognition by Ahmadu Bello University demonstrates that achievements and contributions to society can be honored without recourse to religion or ethnicity. I call on other institutions to follow this noble example,” the 97-year-old cleric said.
The renowned Islamic scholar, who was previously conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in 2008, reiterated the need for Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence. According to him, diversity is a divine gift that should be celebrated, not a source of division.
“Unity and peaceful coexistence are essential for national progress. We must view our diversity as a strength, not a weakness. Differences of opinion are inevitable, but they should not hinder our efforts to build a better nation,” he added.
Sheikh Saleh also addressed the economic challenges facing Nigerians and called on President Bola Tinubu to listen to the plight of the masses. He encouraged citizens to offer constructive criticism and solutions to aid governance.
“Everyone should seek forgiveness from Allah and pray for the country’s peace and prosperity. Religious leaders, including imams and pastors, must intensify prayers for Nigeria’s unity,” he said.
The conferment of the honorary degree on Sheikh Saleh and Dr. Okonjo-Iweala reflects ABU’s commitment to recognizing excellence and inspiring future generations to contribute positively to society.
