The Adamawa State Executive Council has approved a N1 billion virement in the 2025 budget to offset outstanding tuition and allowances owed under its foreign scholarship scheme.
The decision was reached at the Council’s sixth meeting for the year, chaired by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri at the Government House, Yola.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. James Iliya, said the virement would be channeled to the State Scholarship Trust Fund.
He explained that the fund is meant to clear outstanding obligations for Adamawa State-sponsored students studying at Mewar University, India.
“The approval is part of Governor Fintiri’s continued commitment to human capital development and educational advancement,” Iliya said.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Education, Dr. Umar Garba Pella, said the affected students were pursuing health and engineering-related programmes.
He noted that the release of their certificates and subsequent mobilization for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were hinged on settling the pending payments to the university.
Dr. Pella reaffirmed the state’s resolve to ensure that its scholars complete their studies and return home with the required qualifications.
It will be recalled that the students recently paid a thank-you visit to Governor Fintiri, appreciating the state government’s investment in their education abroad.
