The Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Nasarawa State, has produced the first Professor of Radiography in Northern Nigeria, marking a historic milestone in the region’s academic and medical landscape.
The achievement was recorded by Prof. Dlama Joseph Zira Kwaji, an indigene of Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Prof. Kwaji’s promotion to the rank of professor was recently ratified by the university’s governing council, positioning him as a trailblazer in the field of Radiography, particularly in Northern Nigeria where the discipline is still emerging in academic institutions.
The development has been met with widespread celebration in Adamawa and beyond, with citizens, professional bodies, and academic communities commending the achievement.
“This is not just a personal victory for Prof. Dlama but a significant step forward for the North in advancing medical education and research,” said Dr. Musa Babayo, a health policy expert based in Yola.
Stakeholders described the feat as a source of pride for Adamawa State and the entire northern region, urging young academics to draw inspiration from Prof. Kwaji’s dedication and contribution to the field.
Prof. Kwaji is widely recognised for his work in advancing radiographic education, research, and practice in Nigeria. Prior to his promotion, he had served in various academic and administrative capacities within the university and other institutions.
Born and raised in Michika, Prof. Kwaji has credited his success to years of hard work, mentorship, and support from his family and academic peers.
“I am deeply honoured by this recognition. My hope is that it paves the way for more northern scholars to break new ground in the medical sciences,” he Said.
Radiography, a vital component of modern healthcare, has seen increasing demand in Nigeria amid efforts to improve diagnostic and imaging services in hospitals.
The university community and professional associations have since extended congratulatory messages to Prof. Kwaji.
