The Adamawa State Government has approved the release of ₦300 million for the procurement and distribution of essential nutrition commodities across all Local Government Areas (LGAs) in a renewed effort to tackle malnutrition in the state.
The announcement was made on Saturday during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held at the boardroom of the Adamawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ADSPHCDA) in Yola.
The Executive Chairman of the Agency, Dr Sulaiman Saidu Bashir, who presided over the meeting, said the fund would be used to procure vital nutrition supplies and ensure efficient last-mile delivery to targeted beneficiaries. He also announced the adoption of a revamped logistics system aimed at enhancing accountability and timely delivery of nutrition commodities.
According to Dr Bashir, the initiative is part of the state’s broader strategy to combat malnutrition and strengthen the nutrition supply chain across its 21 LGAs.
Present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services, Pharm. Zirra Mathias Bubanani; Permanent Secretary, State Planning Commission, Mr Tanimu Buba; and the State Chairman, Standing Committee on Food and Nutrition.
Also in attendance were members of the ADSPHCDA Board and Management, Executive Secretaries of LGA Primary Health Care Authorities, Directors of Nutrition, and Nutrition Focal Persons from across the LGAs.
The event recorded wide stakeholder representation, including officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), market authorities, security agencies, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Muslim Council, and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Stakeholders commended the government’s intervention, describing it as a timely response to the growing burden of malnutrition in the state, particularly among women and children.
Dr Bashir noted that the revamped logistics system would also strengthen community-level accountability and ensure the traceability of commodities from state warehouses to service delivery points.
