A section of the Adamawa community has raised alarm over alleged human rights violations by a serving army officer identified as Lt.-Col. Nwakama, accusing him of extortion, assault, and unlawful arrests in Michika and Mubi Local Government Areas.
In a public notice circulating on social media, the community alleged that the officer frequently abandoned his duty post in Michika to operate in Mubi, where he was said to have intimidated civilians, shut down filling stations, and extorted money from residents.
The notice further alleged that the officer engaged in the sale of fuel to smugglers at night in Michika and detained several young men in Chibok for refusing to pay bribes.
According to the petition, the officer’s actions amounted to robbery, bribery, attempted murder and other rights abuses, adding that evidence would be published on social media platforms to substantiate the claims.
It called on Gov. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to investigate the activities of what it described as “rogue elements” in military uniform within the state.
While acknowledging the sacrifices of law-abiding security personnel, the petition stressed that acts of misconduct by individuals should not be allowed to undermine the integrity of the armed forces.
At the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army had yet to officially respond to the allegations contained in the public notice.
