The Adamawa State Government has called on communities across the state to take ownership and safeguard electricity installations within their areas to curb vandalism and ensure stable power supply.
This was one of the key resolutions reached at the 11th State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held Wednesday in Yola, presided over by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. James Iliya, said the government is concerned about the lingering epileptic power supply in the state and is determined to protect all public infrastructure from vandalism.
“We are urging citizens to take responsibility in protecting government installations, especially electrical facilities in their communities,” he said.
The SEC also directed residents of flood-prone areas to relocate to safer zones, warning of possible flood risks as the rainy season intensifies.
Iliya explained that both the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) have sensitized vulnerable communities on precautionary measures to mitigate flooding.
On the issue of out-of-school children, the council appealed to parents and guardians to take advantage of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s free education policy to enroll their children in school. The council warned that leaving children out of school is counterproductive to the state’s development goals.
Also addressing the press, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Sadiq Mohammed, disclosed that the government has established a mobile court to prosecute violators of environmental sanitation regulations.
He said the monthly sanitation exercise, which holds every last Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., requires full participation by residents, and defaulters will be penalized accordingly.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr. Audu Tanko Ayuba, added that the council directed all commissioners to lead by example in the monthly cleanup campaigns across all 21 local government areas.
He also noted that the government is working on strategies to supply drought-resistant seeds to farmers to mitigate the impact of changing weather conditions on agricultural output.
