The Adamawa State University (ADSU), Mubi, on Saturday held its 15th, 16th and 17th combined convocation ceremony, during which 9,225 students graduated, with 42 of them bagging First Class Honours.
The event, which covered three academic sessions from 2022 to 2025, also featured the award of 22 PhDs, 100 MScs, 47 MPAs and several Postgraduate Diplomas.
Speaking at the occasion, Gov. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa congratulated the graduates and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reforming and modernising the education sector in the state.
Fintiri, who is the Visitor to the university, described the convocation as a celebration of excellence and resilience, adding that the achievements of the graduates symbolise hope for the future.
Out of the total number of graduates, 1,734 earned Second Class Upper Division, 5,252 obtained Second Class Lower, 1,842 secured Third Class, while one student graduated with a Pass.
“Education remains the only hope for the ordinary man. When all else fails, it is your knowledge, skills and integrity that will bail you out,” the governor said.
He commended the management and governing council of the university for their efforts in promoting academic excellence and innovation.
Fintiri announced plans to further strengthen education in the state through the construction of mega science and technical schools across the 21 local government areas, and the establishment of the Adamawa State College of Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Studies (COTIES), Gulak, to commence academic activities in January 2026.
He also unveiled a new foreign scholarship programme, tagged “Project Wings,” under which 100 students will depart for Turkey next week, while another 200 will proceed to Australia and Canada by January 2026.
The governor further disclosed plans to recruit 5,000 new teachers and embark on key infrastructural projects at ADSU, including internal roads, perimeter fencing and the establishment of new faculties of Law, Engineering and Medicine.
In his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Maxwell Gidado (SAN, OON), explained that the combined convocation could not hold in 2023 due to the resignation of the former Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, who now serves as the state’s Deputy Governor.
He noted that ADSU, established 22 years ago, remains the first state-owned university in the North-East and the second in Northern Nigeria, adding that it continues to thrive due to sustained support from the state government.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Augustine Clement, expressed appreciation to the state government, donor agencies and development partners for their contributions toward transforming ADSU into a globally competitive institution.
As part of the convocation ceremony, the university conferred honorary doctorate degrees on three distinguished Nigerians: Alhaji (Dr) Mohammed Indimi – Doctor of Law (LL.D), Alhaji (Dr) Abdul Samad Rabiu, CON – Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), and Most Rev. (Dr) Dami Mamza – Doctor of Theology (D.Th).
The ceremony also featured the commissioning of two major TETFund-funded projects — the Abdul Samad Rabiu 500-seat lecture theatre and the Prof. Kaletapwa G. Farauta Complex, both executed under the 2017–2020 merged annual intervention scheme.
