Apply: Japan Opens 2026 MEXT Teacher Training Scholarship in Nigeria

The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria has opened applications for the 2026 Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for Teacher Training Students.

The scholarship, administered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), is aimed at strengthening capacity building, educational exchange and human capital development between Japan and Nigeria.

A statement from the embassy said the programme is open to qualified applicants, adding that detailed guidelines on eligibility, documentation and procedures are available online at:

According to the embassy, the deadline for submission of applications is Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, by 12 noon.

Applications must be submitted in hard copy only, either in person or by post, to the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria (MEXT Selection Committee), No. 9 Bobo Street, off Gana Street, Maitama, Abuja. It stressed that online or email submissions would not be accepted.

The embassy warned that incomplete applications would not be processed and stated that applicants must be born on or after April 2, 1991, to be eligible.

It explained that photocopies of graduation certificates and academic transcripts would only be accepted if duly attested by authorised officials of teacher training institutions or universities, a court, or a notary public.

Applicants were also advised not to submit original academic documents unless they were willing to forfeit them permanently, as such documents would not be returned.

The embassy further noted that applications with incomplete or improperly attested documents would be disqualified from the screening process.

It urged applicants to carefully read and comply with all instructions in the application guidelines, warning that candidates whose selected courses are unrelated to their research plans would not be admitted by Japanese universities.

The embassy added that only successful candidates would be contacted at every stage of the screening exercise.
