Army Denies Mutiny Claims, Reaffirms Commitment to Troop Welfare

The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging threats of mutiny by soldiers over salaries and allowances, describing the claims as false, misleading and deliberately sensational.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Army said the report, attributed to an online platform, was based on anonymous and unverifiable claims and did not reflect the realities within the service or the conduct of its personnel. According to the Army, there has been no instance or threat of mutiny, stressing that such an act is a grave offence under military law and completely alien to its values of discipline, professionalism and loyalty to the Constitution.

The statement noted that officers and soldiers are trained to channel grievances through established internal procedures rather than public or unofficial platforms. It also clarified that promotion increments represent only a fraction of military remuneration, which includes consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that vary depending on deployment and responsibilities.

The Army further stated that, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government agencies, it continues to implement structured welfare reforms. These include periodic salary reviews, improved operational allowances, better accommodation, enhanced medical care and insurance packages for troops and their families.

It added that the Chief of Army Staff has, since assuming office, initiated engagements with appropriate authorities on troop welfare, with what it described as progressive outcomes already emerging.

Rejecting claims of neglect, the Army said the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consistently demonstrated commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, particularly amid evolving security challenges.

Reaffirming its stability, the Nigerian Army described itself as a cohesive and professional force focused on its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations. It warned that attempts to portray the institution as unstable or lawless are irresponsible and detrimental to national security.

The statement urged members of the public to disregard unfounded reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate information on the Armed Forces.

The statement was signed by Col. Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, and dated January 19, 2026.
