Army Foils Boko Haram Plot to Plant IEDs on Dikwa–Marte Bridge in Borno

Troops of the Nigerian Army have foiled an attempt by Boko Haram insurgents to plant improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on a bridge along the Dikwa–Marte road in Borno State, the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsallam Abubakar, has confirmed.

The operation, which resulted in the recovery of two heavy IEDs, followed a fierce exchange of gunfire that forced the terrorists to abandon the explosives and flee.

In a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar said the foiled attack was part of ongoing counterinsurgency operations aimed at denying terrorist groups freedom of action in the region.

“Our troops were on a clearance patrol along the Dikwa–Marte axis when they intercepted Boko Haram fighters attempting to lay mines on a strategic bridge. The terrorists were engaged in a gun battle and overpowered, leading to the recovery of the IEDs and other weapons,” Abubakar said.

He disclosed that in addition to the explosives, troops recovered AK-47 rifles and PKT machine guns at the scene of the encounter.

According to the commander, the operation is part of a broader offensive campaign in the Northeast, which includes joint ground and aerial missions by the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force across the Lake Chad region, Sambisa Forest, and the Mandara Mountains.

Maj.-Gen. Abubakar noted that over the past week, troops have neutralised at least nine insurgents in Bama, Gwoza, and Konduga Local Government Areas.

“There has been a remarkable return of stability along the fringes of Lake Chad. The terrorists are in disarray and on the run. We will continue our aggressive posture to ensure they do not regain control of any liberated communities,” he assured.

He further stated that troops remain motivated and committed to maintaining security gains and preventing further attacks on civilians or military formations.

The Theatre Commander urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information to security agencies.
