ASUU Debunks Strike Rumors, Says Negotiations with Government Ongoing

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has categorically denied reports that it has issued a 21-day strike notice to the Federal Government. The union’s president, Emmanuel Osodeke, on Monday, described the reports as mere “social media talks” and assured that any official decision would be formally announced and communicated to the public.

“When we want to do anything, we announce it formally and we will send you a copy,” Osodeke said in a statement. “All those things are just social media talks.”

The rumored strike notice was allegedly issued after ASUU’s National Executive Council meeting at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State. However, Osodeke’s clarification has provided temporary relief, as the union has been vocal about its concerns regarding the implementation of previously agreed-upon agreements with the government.

“We are still discussing with the government to resolve the outstanding issues,” Osodeke added. “If we decide to take any action, we will let the public know officially.”

The union has been pressing for improved infrastructure and sufficient funding for tertiary institutions, among other demands. While the denial of the strike notice provides a temporary reprieve, the underlying issues remain unresolved, leaving the possibility of future industrial action open.

“It’s unfortunate that some people are spreading false information,” Osodeke said. “We urge the public to disregard such reports and wait for official communication from us.”
