ASUU President Visits UNIMAID, Commissions Secretariat Perimeter Wall

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele, has commended the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for its unwavering commitment to staff welfare and infrastructural development.

Prof. Mele, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Services, Prof. Mohammed Ahmed Waziri, gave the commendation on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the ASUU National President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, to the institution.

He praised the union for its efforts in renovating and constructing the perimeter wall of the ASUU Secretariat on campus, describing the initiative as exemplary. He urged other staff unions to emulate ASUU’s dedication to enhancing staff welfare and institutional development.

In his remarks, Prof. Piwuna lauded the Chairperson of ASUU, UNIMAID Branch, Dr. Abubakar Saidu Mshelia, for his outstanding leadership and dedication to the union’s objectives. He said the branch had demonstrated effective leadership and consistent engagement with its members.

“Collective action remains the most effective means of achieving the goals of academic staff across Nigerian universities,” he said, noting that the University of Maiduguri branch serves as a model for other branches nationwide.

Earlier in his welcome address, Dr. Mshelia expressed appreciation to the National President for his visit and continuous support. He reaffirmed the branch’s commitment to advocating for improved working conditions, better health benefits, and the general well-being of its members.

The highlight of the visit was the formal commissioning and dedication of the renovated ASUU Secretariat perimeter wall.
