ASUU Reviews Strike Progress, Urges Members to Remain United

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reviewed the progress of its ongoing warning strike and urged members across branches to remain steadfast and united as negotiations with the Federal Government continue.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the union’s President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, and made available in Strike Bulletin No. 2 released from the Festus Iyayi National Secretariat Complex, University of Abuja.

Piwuna recalled that the union had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government for the conclusion and implementation of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and other outstanding demands.

He said the government’s failure to meet the union’s demands led to the activation of the ongoing warning strike.

According to him, the National Strike Coordinating Committee (NSCC), which met on Saturday, Oct. 18, reviewed developments and expressed satisfaction with the commitment of members nationwide to the strike resolution adopted on Sept. 28.

“The government’s renegotiation team led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed has made little progress, while relevant Senate Committees have been briefed and some resolutions reached,” the statement said.

It added that progress was being recorded in key areas such as third-party deductions, payment of arrears, and land matters in some universities including Kogi State University (KSU), Lagos State University (LASU), and the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).

Piwuna urged members to rely solely on their branch chairpersons for official information and to participate actively in branch congress meetings.

He reiterated the union’s commitment to collective action, stressing that unity remained vital to the success of its struggle.

“Together we bargain, divided we beg,” the statement concluded.
