The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, granting the Federal Government a one-month window to address all pending issues affecting the nation’s universities.
The National President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the suspension at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. He said the decision to suspend the industrial action followed a meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) held at the University of Abuja on Tuesday night.
According to him, the suspension takes effect from midnight of Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
Piwuna explained that the union decided to give the Federal Government the benefit of the doubt after assurances were received regarding the implementation of key agreements, including the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement, payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and the release of withheld salaries.
“We have resolved to suspend the warning strike to give the government one month to fulfil its commitments. However, if there is no tangible progress within this period, the union will be left with no option but to resume the suspended action,” Piwuna stated.
He reiterated ASUU’s commitment to improving the quality of tertiary education in Nigeria, urging the government to demonstrate sincerity and political will in addressing the long-standing issues.
The two-week warning strike, which commenced on October 8, 2025, was part of the union’s protest against what it described as the government’s consistent neglect of previous agreements and poor funding of public universities.
Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Education is expected to meet with ASUU representatives later this week to discuss timelines for implementing the agreed resolutions.
