Bauchi SUBEB Demotes, Suspends Erring Teachers, Staff Over Misconduct

The Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has sanctioned several of its staff and teachers for various acts of misconduct across the state, in a sweeping move aimed at restoring discipline in the basic education sector.

The Executive Chairman of the Board, Alhaji Adamu Muhammad Duguri, made this known on Wednesday while addressing journalists after an unscheduled inspection of third-term resumption activities in selected schools outside the Bauchi metropolis.

Duguri disclosed that the disciplinary actions included demotions, suspensions, and the issuance of queries to affected staff. He also announced the immediate dissolution of all Supervisors under the Bauchi Local Government Education Authority, directing them to return to classroom teaching without delay.

He said the decision followed findings of gross misconduct and unpatriotic behavior by some education supervisors, which he described as a threat to the government’s efforts at repositioning the education sector.

“The government has invested heavily to improve infrastructure and teacher welfare. We will no longer tolerate truancy, negligence, or any action that undermines learning outcomes,” Duguri stated.

The SUBEB boss further lamented the low turnout of teachers and students in some schools and attributed the situation to poor leadership from School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs), school principals, and other stakeholders, despite improved conditions provided by the government.

To boost staff morale and encourage excellence, Duguri also gave directives for the immediate promotion of deserving staff members who have shown dedication to duty.

During the monitoring exercise, the Education Secretary of the Bauchi Local Government Authority, Hajiya Talatu Yakubu, confirmed that schools within the metropolis recorded significant teacher and student presence. However, she noted a contrasting picture in rural areas, where teacher absenteeism contributed to poor student attendance.

Yakubu warned that teachers who fail to show up without valid documentation would have their salaries withheld. She also pledged that hardworking staff members would be duly rewarded to encourage improved performance.

The latest actions by SUBEB signal a renewed commitment by the Bauchi State Government to enforce accountability and uplift basic education standards across the state.
