Bauchi Varsity Matriculates 4,024 Students, Bars Cultism, Other Vices

Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), a Bauchi State-owned institution, has matriculated 4,024 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, with the management declaring zero tolerance for cultism and other social vices.

A source in the university said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Fatima Tahir, made the declaration at the institution’s 13th matriculation ceremony held at the Yuli Campus.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Bala Ma’aji, Tahir said the ceremony formally admitted the students as bona fide members of the university community after taking the oath of allegiance.

She congratulated the new students, noting that only 4,024 candidates were offered admission out of the 9,378 applicants shortlisted for the session.

“Over 4,000 qualified candidates could not be accommodated due to limited capacity,” she said.

The Vice-Chancellor assured parents and guardians that the university would continue to uphold academic integrity and safeguard the interests of students.

She warned that the institution had zero tolerance for anti-social behaviours such as cultism, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, drug abuse, indecent dressing, truancy, vandalism and the practice of students offering inducements to lecturers.

“The university will not hesitate to apply disciplinary measures against any student found violating its rules and regulations,” Tahir said.

She advised the students to remain security-conscious and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the Bauchi State Government, under Gov. Bala Mohammed, for its support to education, as well as Shell Petroleum Development Company for constructing an ICT centre at the Gadau Campus and TETFund for building 48 female hostels at the Yuli Campus.

She also urged host communities to strengthen security around the institution, noting that the university experienced security challenges during the previous academic session.

A breakdown of the newly admitted students showed that the Faculty of Science had the highest number with 935 students, followed by Social Sciences with 877 and Management Sciences with 587.

Others include Basic Medical Sciences with 507, Education with 461, Agriculture with 335, Arts with 205, Law with 59 and Pharmaceutical Sciences with 58.

Of the total number matriculated, 1,434 are female, while 2,590 are male.
