Boko Haram Suspects Vandalise Power Infrastructure, Cut Off Electricity in Yobe

Power supply has been cut off in parts of Yobe State following the destruction of electricity transmission towers by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Katarko village, Gujba Local Government Area.

The attack, which occurred late Friday, has plunged several communities into darkness and disrupted economic activities across the state.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Yobe Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) described the development as “an unfortunate act of sabotage” affecting the transmission network linking Damaturu and surrounding areas.

According to the statement, YEDC has restored electricity to some customers in Damaturu and its environs through an alternative supply route, while working closely with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to ensure full restoration of power through the national grid.

“Maiduguri Metropolitan City will continue to receive power from the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP),” the company added.

YEDC appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement or activity around power infrastructure to security agencies or the nearest YEDC office.

“This is not the first time such an attack has occurred. We urge residents to cooperate with law enforcement to protect critical national assets,” the statement read.

As of the time of filing this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, although security sources suspect it was carried out by Boko Haram terrorists who have repeatedly targeted electricity installations in the North-East.

The Katarko axis, located along the Damaturu–Buni Yadi road, has in the past witnessed multiple attacks on power facilities and military formations.

Residents have expressed concern that the frequent vandalization of power lines continues to worsen living conditions and hinder recovery efforts in the insurgency-affected region.

Meanwhile, security operatives have reportedly been deployed to the area to forestall further attacks and protect other critical infrastructure.
