Borno-Based Engineer Invents Solar-Powered Tricycle for Persons with Disabilities

A member of the Physical Disability (OPD) community in Borno State, Engineer Abubakar Ibrahim, has invented a solar-powered tricycle designed to improve mobility and livelihoods of persons with disabilities in the state.

The innovation, developed under the umbrella of the Borno State Physical Disability Organization, is aimed at easing transportation challenges faced by persons with disabilities, particularly when travelling long distances.

Speaking on the development, the Chairman of the Borno State Physical Disability Organization, Mohammed Abubakar, described the invention as a major breakthrough that reflects the creativity and resilience of persons with disabilities in the state.

According to him, the tricycle is uniquely designed with a dual system. While one wheel is powered by solar energy, the other is human-powered, allowing users to continue their journey even when the battery runs out.

“The solar-powered tricycle will significantly enhance the independence and productivity of persons with disabilities by reducing their reliance on others for movement,” he said.

Mohammed Abubakar added that the innovation demonstrates the capacity of persons with disabilities to contribute meaningfully to technological and socio-economic development when given the necessary support.

The organization has called on the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and elected office holders, to support the initiative to ensure wider production and accessibility.

They noted that supporting the project would not only improve mobility but also enhance livelihood opportunities and social inclusion for persons with disabilities across the state.
