Borno Closes Congested Cemeteries, Provides Alternative Burial Sites

The Borno State Government has announced the closure of the Gwange Muslim Cemetery along Bama Road and the Christian Cemetery at Old GRA, Maiduguri, effective September 1.

According to a statement by Mohammed Lawan Abubakar, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Religious Affairs on Wednesday, the decision was made due to congestion, health hazards, and recommendations from stakeholders.

The government has arranged for the Muslim community to use the Dalori Cemetery along Bama Road, while the Christian community is to use the Maximum Security Cemetery off Baga Road, Maiduguri.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs has purchased six vehicles to assist the public in conveying corpses to the designated graveyards, with plans to purchase more vehicles in the near future.

The government assured that adequate arrangements would be made to address all concerns and that more burial sites would be opened as the town expands.
