Borno Emerges Best Performing State in Malaria, Immunisation Project

Borno State has emerged as the overall best-performing state in the implementation of the Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) project.

IMPACT is a World Bank-supported, community-driven initiative aimed at reducing by half the mortality rate of children under five years by 2030 through strengthened primary healthcare delivery.

The project provides integrated immunisation-plus and malaria services to vulnerable populations across 235 primary and secondary healthcare facilities in the state.

Receiving the award at the Government House, Maiduguri, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum commended the State Ministry of Health for its exceptional performance in driving the project’s success.

Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to further investment in the health sector to enhance the wellbeing of citizens.

“I would like to commend the Health Commissioner, the Permanent Secretary, the IMPACT project coordinator, and the rest of the team for their efforts in achieving this feat of becoming the best-performing state. On behalf of the government and people of the state, I extend our sincere gratitude,” Zulum said.

“Healthcare is one of the priorities of this administration. Therefore, I assure you that more investment will be made in the entire value chain of the health sector to ensure quality and affordable healthcare delivery for the people of the state,” he added.

Presenting the award to the governor, Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Prof. Baba Malum Gana, attributed the state’s success to the holistic and coordinated implementation of the project, the use of digital monitoring tools, and improved data quality.

He disclosed that over two million anti-malaria drugs, two million test kits, and other essential medical consumables had been distributed across 235 healthcare facilities in the past year.

“In the last one year, more than two million anti-malaria drugs, 359,596 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets, and two million test kits and other non-malaria medical consumables have been distributed across the state,” Malum Gana said.

The commissioner noted that despite security challenges and the 2024 flood disaster, Borno successfully achieved significant immunisation coverage, particularly in vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities.
